Babu Charitable Activities and Events
Babu is committed to the pet community and other humane causes, regularly participates in rescue and charitable activities, and donates products to charitable fundraisers. The following are our recent activities.
For the Hounds
Babu recently donated a two Happy Dog bowls, a Dog & Puppies treat canister and a ChillyChow container to the March 2008 For the Hounds fundraising auction. For the Hounds, an all-volunteer, non-profit organization, primarily focuses on Greyhound rescue, but is also a sight hound rescue and placement organization for Greyhounds, Italian Greyhounds, Borzoi, Whippet, Afghan and Saluki sight hounds. Find For the Hounds and its upcoming online auction at www.forthehounds.com.
Metro Ferals, Washington Humane Society and Alley Cat Allies
Babu's vice president, Barbara Haugen, and her husband, Dan Hodes, are active volunteers with several organizations including Metro Ferals, the Washington Humane Society and Alley Cat Allies, all dedicated to humanely reducing the population of feral cats and kittens by promoting a non-lethal alternative called Trap-Neuter-Return or TNR. On many weekends, you can find Barbara and Dan cruising the alleys of the District of Columbia responding to calls from concerned neighbors regarding colonies of feral cats and kittens. Once caught, the cats and kittens are taken to a spay/neuter center operated by the Washington Humane Society where they are examined by a veterinarian, sterilized, and given rabies and distemper shots. Young kittens, and lost, stray or abandoned adult cats, are brought to foster-home volunteers where they are socialized and later placed in permanent homes. Feral cats are returned to their home neighborhoods, where they are cared for by volunteer caregivers.

Dogma
In support of various northern Virginia canine rescue and adoption organizations, Babu donated two large gift baskets containing the full range of Babu dog products to the Dogma Bakery fundraising auction. We were pleased that our baskets were among the most popular items at the auction and brought in much needed funding for this worthy cause. Dogma (www.dogmabakery.com), a gourmet dog bakery and boutique in Arlington, provides high quality, fresh baked, all-natural dog treats and is an important resource for the local dog community.
The Kramer-Oberdorfer Housing Fund
Babu's president, Julia Kramer, and her husband, Tom Oberdorfer, founded the Kramer-Oberdorfer Housing Fund (KOHF), when they married in 2004. The foundation raises funds to provide transitional housing, training and life coaching to homeless, single mothers and their children and partners with Northern Virginia Family Services. The combined effort provides these women with safe and affordable housing while giving them the opportunity to further their education, job training and other skills necessary to improve their lives. Babu was pleased to donate a porcelain Babu Baby set, and a collection of Babu dog and cat products, to KOHF's May 2008 fundraising auction. Visit www.kohf.org for more information.
The Junior League Holiday Fundraiser and Gift Show
Babu, Inc. participated in the 2007 - A Capital Collection of Holiday Shops, the Junior League of Washington's largest annual fundraiser. Monies raised through ticket sales and a portion of vendor sales are given back to the greater Washington community in the form of grants to address complex issues of literacy in our region. In support of these efforts, Babu donated two complete sets of cat and dog products and a "Babu Baby" set to the Jr. League silent auction.
